Viamici—Mobile Navigation Using Paper and Ad Hoc Maps
Viamici is the first map georeferencing application for the Android
platform and the first such a solution on the mobile market. It will
allow you to see your current position on top of a map image. The map
image can be for example a photo of a map sign encountered on
a trail, a photographed or scanned paper map or any map image
found on the Internet—simply, any map saved in a graphic file
(e.g., JPG, PNG).
For using Viamici you do not need Internet connection—thus carrier
data plan charges do not apply. You can use it even in the areas where
your carrier has no coverage (e.g., in national parks, in the mountains).
The only permissions needed are:
read fine (GPS) location,
read phone state and identity—which
is only used for checking if the phone identifier (IMEI or MEID) is
the one for which a license was bought,
modify/delete SD card contents—the
application is build to work with an Android version starting from
the verion 1.5 (Cupcake) while this permission was introduced in the
version 1.6 (Donut), thus on versions starting from 1.6 this
permission is also listed even that Viamici does not modify/delete
SD card contents.
You can buy the license for using Viamici through PayPal (using
a credit/debit card as well as bank transfer).
Price: $10 USD
